Anthropology is the study of people, both ancient and modern, in their cultural, biological, and environmental contexts. The discipline incorporates a wide range of theoretical and methodological traditions, drawing on and contributing to approaches in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Archaeologists study past human societies, primarily through the recovery and analysis of the material culture and environmental data that they have left behind. The graduate program in biological anthropology at CU Boulder offers training in several areas, including primatology, human biology, and paleoanthropology. Cultural anthropology is the subfield of anthropology concerned with cultural variation and universals among past and present human societies. At CU-Boulder, regional expertise extends from the Arctic to East Africa, from the Caribbean to Tibet.<br><br>Doctoral students will be expected to demonstrate an ability to independently carry out original field or laboratory research, to acquire original data, make appropriate analyses, and prepare reports of publishable caliber.
