Students whose native language is neither English nor German and who have not taken their first degree in a program taught in either language will have their language skills assessed by the admitting university.
While every student will be registered at both the University of Waterloo and the Universität Mannheim during the two-year program, students should apply to the university that they will consider their home-university, via that university's application system. This means that Canadian students should apply to the University of Waterloo while German students should apply to the Universität Mannheim.

课程简介
Welcome to Waterloo's Master of Arts in Intercultural German Studies This section of the department's website exists to provide graduate students in this joint degree program some basic information and advice. A complete program handbook is available upon request. This joint international MA program will award you one degree from two universities, the University of Waterloo and the Universität Mannheim. This international accreditation means you will have equal degree recognition in Europe and North America. More integrated than an exchange term, this MA is the first joint transatlantic humanities degree available in Canada. Your studies will help you develop the linguistic, research and intercultural skills and understanding necessary for succeeding in today's knowledge-based global society. The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies offers degrees in German and Russian (BA, MA, PhD) and courses in Croatian and Dutch. We are also offering a minor concentration in Cultural Identities together with the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies. Home of one of Canada's largest and most diverse German programs, the department plays a leading role in the dissemination of German and Slavic culture in Canada. Our faculty members have expertise in second language instruction, applied linguistics, and literary, film, and cultural studies.
