Applicants will be considered for admission only if they have earned an accredited bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Admission depends upon the strength of the general undergraduate record, scores on the Graduate Record Examination, letters of recommendation, candidate statement and interests, and relevant laboratory or field research experience. Candidates for admission are expected to have some background in psychology as well as mathematics and statistics. We do not have minimum GPA or GRE scores. International applicants and U.S. applicants who have never studied in the U.S. must show proof of English proficiency. Please upload copies of your transcripts for all post-secondary schools that you have attended. We require three letters of recommendation in support of each application. These letters will be submitted electronically through the online application. A candidate statement of academic purpose should discuss your academic and career objectives in a concise, sharply focused, and well-crafted essay. In order to matriculate, your TOEFL or IELTS scores need to meet our requirements in all subsections: TOEFL - No less than 25 on each subsection, with 4 sub scores of 26 each(100). IELTS - Minimum required scores in the IELTS are an overall score of 7, with sub scores of 7 each. (Note: students are required to take the Academic Reading/Writing test within IELTS, not the General Training Reading/Writing test).

Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago has been a leading center of scholarship, research and teaching in psychology and related fields. True to the Division's interdisciplinary nature, its faculty members reflect the contemporary state of the field by serving on more than one of the department's programs in cognition, developmental psychology, integrative neuroscience, and social psychology. Additionally, the department maintains close connections with other areas of the university: faculty and students participate in courses, colloquia, workshops and joint research ventures with scholars in related departments including anthropology, biology, computer science, education, linguistics, and philosophy, and in the University's professional schools of business, public policy, law, medicine, and social service administration.<br><br>Doctoral study in the University of Chicago's Department of Psychology typically spans five years and includes a common curriculum of eight courses with other requirements set by the student's area of specialization. In addition, each student will complete a trial research project under the guidance of a faculty advisor or advisors, and complete a dissertation. Students are evaluated yearly to determine progress. Advisors are a critical component of students' experience in the doctoral program, providing guidance and collaboration in conducting research and academic advising.
