The CV should indicate the applicant's education, qualifications for graduate study (such as language training), and other appropriate accomplishments.
Personal Statement
The personal statement should be a one- or two-page statement indicating the reasons for the applicant's interest in graduate study at the University of Kentucky. It should indicate if the applicant is interested in obtaining a terminal MA degree, a PhD degree, or the MA and PhD degrees. It should also explain what field(s) the applicant hopes to concentrate on as a graduate student, and, if possible, with which faculty member the applicant wishes to work. Applicants should make intellectual and scholarly interests the focal point of these statements.
Writing Sample
We ask for two writing samples -- a longer research paper and a short book review. Generally, applicants should combine them into one document to simplify submission.
Three letters of recommendation
The GRE is not required for admission to this program. For the Graduate School, the minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 (paper-based) 213 (computer-based), or 79 (internet-based). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5
An overall grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate work and 3.00 on all graduate work is required by the Graduate School.

Students will be admitted to the doctoral program only if they have first earned an M.A. degree in history at UK or at another institution. The Ph.D. degree is granted after the student has demonstrated an extensive knowledge of a number of specialized and general fields of history or related disciplines and a capacity to pursue research in these fields. The department seeks to train outstanding students who will gain a firm base of historical knowledge, become skilled researchers and writers of historical prose, and master both traditional and newer methods of historical inquiry. The Department of History of the University of Kentucky is a vibrant center of scholarship and teaching that has been training students for over 75 years. Our 31 faculty members have earned national and international recognition. We offer course work and training for undergraduate and graduate students in the history of the Americas, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. All faculty teach introductory, survey, and topical courses as well as seminars.
