The MAT at MICA is for students who have a passion for art a commitment to children and young people and a desire to seek certification as PreK-12 teachers The MA in Teaching MAT degree program is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education MSDE and prepares you to become an art teacher in Maryland public schools Applicants with either a BFA or BA BS degree in studio art are welcome Successful applicants typically have comprehensive preparation in both studio art and art history and a portfolio demonstrating an understanding of the deep purposes making art can serve

Portfolio of Artwork
Applicants should submit 18-20 digital images or time based personal artwork for review online via mica.slideroom.com Include images that show a depth and a breadth of artworks The system allows applicants to create an inventory of pieces and attach the following information title date medium dimensions and notes Additional technical and submission guidelines are available on Slide Room
TOEFL: A minimum overall band score of 75 on the iBT Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required to be considered for admission. Candidates may submit their scores digitally or in hardcopy. MICA's institution code is 5399.

MICA's M.A.T. program is nationally recognized for its success in preparing art education professionals who integrate personal artistry with the skill and understanding to direct the art making of others. Our program offers hands-on experience in teaching along with coursework in practice, current theory, and research-all within a supportive community of students and faculty who are internationally recognized leaders in the field.<br><br>Nationally recognized for its successful approach to preparing art education professionals, MICA's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program focuses on the notion that teaching is an art in itself and that the best art teacher is a practicing, accomplished artist.<br><br>The four-semester residency consists of 53 credits of graduate education, internships and student teaching, and independent studio work, a state-mandated six credits in the teaching of reading are integrated into the curriculum. The program is a Maryland State Approved Program for art teacher certification in grades preK-12. All students take national teacher exams (Praxis exams) and passing scores, as set by the state of Maryland, are required for completion of the program and degree.
