St Michael’s Collegiate School, commonly known as Collegiate, is an independent Anglican girls’ school in Hobart, Tasmania, with a history dating back to 1892. The school was founded when seven Sisters of the Church arrived from England and opened St David’s School in Synod Hall. Within a year, the name “The Collegiate School” was adopted, and in 1895 the school purchased “Stephenville,” establishing a permanent home. From its earliest years, Collegiate was known for academic ambition, encouraging girls to sit external examinations and later welcoming alumnae back as teachers. Traditions such as the house system, prefect leadership, and red and white school colours developed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, forming a strong sense of identity.
