San Diego State University received its first federal grant in the 1950s and began its first doctoral program in the 1960s, and has continued to chart a course of discovery and scholarship ever since. SDSU is the flagship research institution of the 23-campus California State University system, offering 24 doctoral programs (including 21 joint-doctoral degrees) and netting 135 million USD in grants and contracts.

The ARC is an 80,000-square-foot fitness facility that offers exercise classes, intramural sports, and a rock climbing wall.
