Bachelor of Global Studies and Bachelor of Science [Conjoint] - Biological Sciences - Biotechnology Pathway
课程简介
A BGlobalSt/BSc conjoint allows you to complete a BGlobalSt and a BSc in less time than it would take to complete the two degrees separately. You can combine one of four majors in the BGlobalSt with a wide range of subjects spanning the full range of scientific enquiry. You'll explore the value of subjectivity and objectivity, of creativity and critique, of free thought and rational argument. You'll develop your analytical and numerical abilities as well as your written and verbal communication skills. You'll also investigate the cultural, societal and historical context of scientific discovery. The BGlobalSt/BSc usually takes four years to complete.

The scope of Biological Sciences (Biology) is extensive. It covers the structure and function of all living organisms, their relationships and evolutionary origins. It also looks at their interactions, and the physical and chemical worlds around them. The biological sciences have never been more important for preserving New Zealand's economic prosperity and the natural biodiversity of our islands in the face of global threats such as climate change and population growth. Discovery in the biosciences has advanced at breathtaking speed. This has led to a new generation of therapies in health and medicine, sustainable consumer-focused products in agbiotech industries, and novel strategies for the protection of fragile ecosystems.

Biotechnology, in its broadest sense, is the commercial exploitation of living organisms or their components, such as proteins. Biotechnology has traditionally encompassed industrial microbiology, and dealt with ancient processes such as brewing or the microbial production of cheese and yoghurt. In the last few years, however, an avalanche of genetic and protein information has been discovered, with equally impressive advances in transgenic and animal cloning technologies. In this light, biotechnology has broadened its scope and is poised to make significant impacts on our health and nutrition, and how we interact with our environment. Our graduates are highly sought after by employers in industry and government agencies, and our staff are recipients of both national and international research funding and awards and feature regularly in scientific communications and social media.
