Bioinformatics is the development and application of computational and statistical techniques for solving problems involving complex biological data. This emerging discipline is growing rapidly alongside technological developments for large-scale data generation in the life sciences, such as in genomics, proteomics, functional pathway analysis, health sciences, and biodiversity. Demand is accelerating for new approaches for data storage, retrieval, analysis, and applications. A new generation of professionals is required to meet this demand, having bioinformatics skills and the capacity to create new approaches. <br><br>In the Ph.D. program students will typically take 12 semesters to work on a traditional thesis-based research project and write a thesis. This program will provide students with the opportunity to develop research and communication skills in bioinformatics at a world-class level. Students will take at least one course and complete a qualifying exam. Students can enter the program during any semester.<br>The doctorate program is research-based and aims to develop students who are experits in bioinformatics and who contribute to current research. Applicants identify an advisor prior to admission into the program, and research is conducted under the advisor's supervision. PhD programs typically take twelve semesters. Students are required to complete one course, pass a qualifying exam, and write and successfully defend a thesis.
