Our PhD program offers opportunities for advanced independent research and study in the biological sciences. Students perform a research project with a faculty supervisor over a period of three to five years (a two-year minimum applies if students already hold a recognized MSc degree), culminating in a presentation and defense of a dissertation. During this time, students also take a minimum of two graduate level courses, perform graduate teaching assistantship (GA) duties in undergraduate courses and participate in a seminar series. For students approved to transfer from an MSc program, at least one MSc course must be completed before the transfer and two more will be required during the PhD program.<br><br>Faculty within the Department of Integrative Biology are outstanding biologists with international reputations as excellent researchers. They offer a wide range of research opportunities at all levels of biology, from DNA to ecosystems. Our department offers both an MSc Biological Sciences research degree and a PhD Biological Sciences research degree. Due to our location in Canada, many of our graduate students study local species found in the Great Lakes area however, studies are undertaken on species in the arctic, as far west as Vancouver Island, BC, and in the eastern provinces. Some students travel to the US for their field work, and as far south as Costa Rica. Our graduates have achieved success at all levels of academia, industry, and government, and have also used their education as a springboard to success in professional programs including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and physical therapy.
