We created the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in English for students interested in taking a diverse and individualized approach to their studies. As a student in this program, you will work with a faculty advisor and supervisory committee to develop a plan of study that incorporates courses from your primary interest in English with a compatible co-discipline. Some suggested compatible co-disciplines include art history, history, and curriculum and instruction. Coursework can be tailored to your interests and professional goals and integrates multiple disciplinary perspectives to give you the methodological and theoretical tools needed to succeed in a variety of professional and scholarly settings. Coursework in this program is divided between your primary discipline and co-discipline. After completing your coursework, you will take comprehensive examinations in both areas of study and then move on to the research and dissertation component of this program. With approval from your supervisory committee, you will commence the multi-year process of researching, writing and completing your dissertation, before finally presenting your work during your dissertation defense.
