Enrich your life as an artistic teacher and a student of music. This program offers advanced training to help you maximize your talents as a musician, performer and educator. Coursework is split between your primary discipline in music education and a compatible co-discipline, such as curriculum and instruction. The program itself consists of three main components – seminars and core courses, research, and teaching techniques and philosophies. Seminars and core courses provide you with the theory, teaching methods and structure that will serve as a foundation for your own teaching practice. The research component provides you with opportunities to conduct your own research and aid faculty in theirs. And finally, the teaching techniques and philosophies portion allows you to gain first-hand experience observing and teaching at the undergraduate and K-12 levels. Total degree-hour requirements for this program will vary depending on your career goals and prior educational experience. We expect that students who have previously earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree in music education or music therapy will need to complete between 35-45 hours of pre-dissertation coursework. Students with degrees in other areas of study will likely need to complete additional hours outside of this range. Additionally, all students will be required to take a comprehensive exam and complete a research and dissertation component equivalent to a minimum of 12 hours to earn their degree.
