At MICA, product design is both local and global, because we know that instruction alone is not enough. To prepare to design products for a rapidly changing worlds, students here work with expert faculty - and a host of decision makers, industry leaders, activists, and entrepreneurs from around the globe. The fusion of 3D design, technology, and making is expanding the definition of product and influencing how humans respond aesthetically and practically with every imaginable object today - from furniture and apparel to appliances and medical devices. And anyone with a Fitbit or smartphone recognizes that new connections between things and systems are changing the way we live. MICA's Product Design program capitalizes on the developing future visions of the industry, offering a hands-on curriculum that gives you deep knowledge of materials, processes, and design thinking along with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of society. You become well-trained designers capable of reimagining objects or systems - and inventing new ones - that will shape the future. The program works to support the integration of sustainable design knowledge and entrepreneurial intelligence with social good, all of which are cornerstones of MICA's vision for the future. Students learn to design for multiple scales of production, and across various sectors. Product Design works in partnership with MICA's groundbreaking Center for Social Design on curricular and co-curricular projects.<br><br>Under the guidance of an impressive faculty of scholar-teachers, you gain first-rate liberal arts education and build a depth of understanding in such areas as philosophy and ethics or social sciences and political history, while pursuing advanced artistic investigations in a studio major.<br>In four years, you will complete all requirements for a B.F.A. in a studio discipline simultaneously with a challenging liberal arts major in Humanistic Studies, allowing you to begin graduate study a year earlier than 5-year B.A./B.F.A. programs.
