To be considered for admission to UCSB, applicants must have received a bachelor's degree or its equivalent (with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better) from an accredited university prior to the quarter for which admission is sought.
completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an institution whose primary language of instruction is English. The minimum score for consideration is 550 when taking the paper-based TOEFL, or 80 when taking the internet-based test, some departments require a higher score. Applicants must make arrangements to take the TOEFL directly with ETS (www.ets.org). Scores should be reported to UCSB using institution code 4835. TOEFL scores must be no more than two years old at the time of application submission. UCSB also considers a minimal score of 7 on the IELTS as an alternative to the TOEFL. IELTS scores must be no more than two years old at the time of application submission

课程简介
Mathematical Analysis initially developed from arguments needed in the infinitesimal study of geometrical objects and physical motions. After the great success of the heroic age of differential and integral calculus, it was realized that, by focusing attention not on a single function in isolation, but rather on an appropriate class of functions, one could obtain a better understanding and an expansion of the classical theories. Thus, Functional Analysis was born about a century ago, with great benefits to several areas of modern mathematics and many remarkable applications to the natural sciences.<br><br>The faculty listed by our department as analysts are actually all functional analysts. They like to work in infinite dimensional spaces (of functions, operators, representations, dynamical systems). Among their main objectives are the solution of equations, minimization of functionals, and classification and study of algebras of operators. The numerous applications vary from classical problems of continuum mechanics and information theory to image analysis, knot theory and quantum computing.
