The department offers courses leading to the degree of bachelor of science with a major in mathematics. The bachelor's degrees have specializations in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics/operations research, statistics, or general mathematics study. The bachelor of science degree is an expanded major, which provides a more intense experience in mathematics, computing and science. Students planning to major in mathematics are encouraged to consult an advisor from the Mathematics and Statistics Department to design a program of study in mathematics or statistics.<br>Students will be able to:<br>demonstrate problem solving and modeling, which includes appreciating the connections between applications and theory. This means translating a real world problem into an abstract model, applying mathematical/stochastic tools to solve the problem, and then translating the solution back to real world terms.<br>demonstrate knowledge of the nature of mathematical proofs. Learning how to make rigorous mathematical arguments.<br>demonstrate computer literacy by using technology to solve problems and make conjectures.
