To be considered for admission, you must have completed or are in the process of completing secondary school with a cumulative or overall grade point average (GPA) equivalent of B or higher. Focus will also be on the grades/marks you have received for Mathematics and Science courses.
The SAT or ACT is optional for prospective international students applying for 2021-2022 admissions.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
All official transcripts, examination certifications (e.g., General Certificate of Education) and other documents showing all high school and any completed post-secondary work must be submitted to the Office of Admissions. All official transcripts must be mailed directly by the institution or Ministry of Education to the Office of Admissions. Documents mailed or hand carried by you or anyone else will not be accepted as official or used for admission consideration.
Secondary school transcripts must include a list of courses taken and grades/internal marks received each year, class rank for the last four years of secondary school, and an explanation of the school's grading system. If transcripts with annual internal marks are unavailable directly from the school, you may photocopy your mark sheets or grade reports and have them certified by a school official who verifies that a transcript is otherwise not available. Linguistics is the scientific study of language. Language is a human behavior, a product of the human brain. It is used for social purposes, and can be acquired by human children and adults. Languages are also a community's means of communication they change over time, and today, they are increasingly becoming endangered and dying. The subfields of linguistics are dedicated to understanding and explaining these aspects of language.<br>Undergraduates in Hawaii have many good reasons to study Linguistics.<br>Knowledge about language is more important here than in most places in the country, because of the State's unique diversity of languages hundreds of languages from all over the world are spoken here.<br>Hawaii offers a natural laboratory for trying to understand multilingualism, code-mixing (changing from one language to another mid-sentence), second language learning, language endangerment and revitalization (of the Hawaiian language, for example), and pidgins and creoles.<br>Languages are closely tied to cultural, geographic, and ethnic identity, issues that are central to Hawaii's education and politics.<br>Students at UH Manoa who study Linguistics discover that it helps them understand a number of different things:<br>how language is used as a means to gain and maintain power.<br>how it is used to influence people.<br>how it is tied to ethnic and geographical identity.<br>how it is processed by the mind.<br>how children acquire it.
