Our students pursue original research in a variety of linguistic subdisciplines, including core theoretical areas (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax) and combined areas (e.g. historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics). The department continues to encourage collection of primary data through fieldwork with native speakers of understudied and endangered languages, and increasingly our students are finding fruitful projects based on experimental and corpus data. All programs include coursework, generals papers (at the PhD level), the development of a thesis proposal, and the research, writing and defense of a thesis. Students with undergraduate course deficiencies may be admitted to the Pre-Master's program to complete the background requirements.<br><br>Expected Duration - 1 year.
