The Linguistics Department at Georgetown is committed to analyzing a diversity of linguistic phenomena through different modes of inquiry. We examine language through its structure, acquisition, use in context, and via computational models. By valuing the legitimacy and relevance of research at every level of analysis, and acknowledging that no one model of language can provide all the answers (or even address all the pertinent questions), we provide a foundation of linguistic study in a department that is built upon a tradition of unique pluralism. The Master of Science in linguistics allows students to gain expertise in focused topics of study, allowing them to build upon skills and gain new insights. M.S. students are admitted to one of four concentrations. Applied Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Theoretical Linguistics<br><br>Computational Linguistics is the scientific study of language from a computational perspective. It is a lively and intellectually vital scientific discipline, generating advances that shed new insight on models of human linguistic abilities, as well as creating opportunities for practical tools that can be of tremendous benefit to society. Computational linguistics faculty and students participate in the interdisciplinary GUCL community on campus.
