All linguistics majors study core topics such as morphology (word structure), syntax (grammar), phonology (sound structure), languages of the world, language acquisition, and sociocultural aspects of language. In addition, they choose among elective topics such as language and gender, psycholinguistics, semantics, the history of English, and others.<br><br>A degree in Linguistics can relate to a variety of careers. Recent graduates have found work in areas such as translation, teaching English abroad, working for Google, etc. <br>The Linguistics Department at CSULB is committed to analyzing diverse aspects of spoken and sign languages and working with the communities that use them. Guided by our view of language as a cultural, social, and psychological phenomenon, we mentor students as they examine universal and unique properties across languages and modalities. We do so by analyzing the structure and function of language, the teaching and acquisition of language, and the use of languages in different contexts.
