A baccalaureate (bachelor's) degree, requiring four years of full-time study or equivalent, from a college or university holding full regional or national accreditation. GRE General Test, Knowledge of Russian language adequate for graduate study, as determined by a proficiency exam based on the department's fourth-year course. General acquaintance with the major works of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Russian literature equivalent to at least the materials covered in a two-semester undergraduate survey course.

The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at Indiana University was first organized in 1947 as the Department of Slavic Studies under the leadership of Michael Ginsburg, the university's first professor of Russian.
