The Department of History includes a Ph.D. specialization in Early Modern Europe. The principal faculty in this field are Karl Appuhn, Aye Baltaciolu-Brammer, Daniel Jtte, John Shovlin, and Larry Wolff. While each focuses on distinct geographical regions (Italy, the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain, and Central Europe) and themes (environment, medicine, political economy, state formation, material culture, identity formation), all share a broad engagement with social and cultural history, and encourage students to pursue both interdisciplinary and transnational approaches. <br><br> <br><br>Within the History Department, there is much discussion and exchange between students and faculty working on Early Modern Europe and those in other chronological, national and transnational fields, such as Atlantic World, Middle East and Islamic Studies, and medieval and modern Europe. Students in the Early Modern Europe field frequently participate in the Atlantic Workshop. Outside the department, the Ottoman and Turkish Initiative the Medieval and Renaissance Center offer programming of interest. The Medieval and Renaissance Center also hosts an active interdisciplinary graduate student-run workshop (MARGIN).
