2.7 (on a grading scale with 4.0=A, approximately a B- average) on the last two years of Bachelor's coursework, 3.0 on all previous graduate work (approximately a B average). An applicant was awarded a Master's degree at an accredited college/university in the United States and has been in residence in the United States continuously prior to application to SIU (not out of the country for more than one calendar year). You have a minimum of 60 graded (A, B, C) hours of recent coursework completed at an accredited college / university in the United States with continuous residence in the United States prior to application at SIU. Pass / Fail, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory, or Proficiency credit is not acceptable. The English language requirement may be met by submitting: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 80 on the internet-based TOEFL, 6.5 on the IELTS
Minimum requirements for students entering the M.S. in Animal Science program are:
a bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Biological Sciences, or related field
a minimum 3.0 cumulative undergraduate G.P.A. (A = 4.0)
300 cumulative score, 3.0 analytical writing score on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
Statement of Research Interests
three letters of recommendation (at least two from undergraduate professors)
TOEFL exam for international students. Students can be admitted with a G.P.A. under 3.0 or for a GRE deficiency on a conditional basis and must enroll in a minimum of seven credit hours of structured courses at the 400-500 level during their first semester and achieve a B or better in each course or be dropped from the program. Undergraduate courses cannot be given graduate credit.

Animal nutrition specialists study a variety of species, emphasizing vitamin and mineral metabolism, energy and protein utilization and feed efficiency. Students undertake individual research, sometimes in cooperation with an industry partner. Our emphasis on research methodology complements out rigorous curriculum.<br>Our academic program covers the various disciplines of animal science and nutrition, reproductive physiology, biotechnology and growth and development with emphasis on beef cattle, dairy cattle, equine, and swine. Other animal or cell culture systems are sometimes used as research models.<br><br>You can choose between a thesis or non-thesis option. Students planning on pursuing a PhD. should follow the thesis option. Our rigorous coursework and directed study lay a solid foundation for your doctoral degree. The non-thesis option has a higher concentration of classes and is more structured, helping those wishing to enter the industry right after graduation, advance in the workplace. Students experience quality, hands-on learning both in the classroom and in the daily care, feeding, management and supervision of animals.
