The School of Teaching and Learning prepares you for a variety of careers in education. We offer four undergraduate and three graduate programs. The Elementary Education program prepares candidates to teach reading, writing, science, mathematics, life skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving strategies to elementary school students, from first through sixth grade. Diverse coursework includes content in psychology, special education, and curriculum and instruction in addition to clinical field experiences and student teaching. The Bilingual/Bicultural Sequence focuses on the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, preparing future teachers to teach in bilingual elementary classrooms from first through sixth grade. Graduates often have a minor in Spanish or ESL endorsement. Coursework in elementary education provides individuals with required licensure and also the background to understand the concepts and structure of teaching in elementary schools. The program prepares individuals to teach reading, writing, science, mathematics, life skills, critical thinking skills, and problem solving strategies to elementary school students. This is a competitive major at Illinois State University and is a well respected program.
