Bachelor’s degree in English, or at least 24 upper-level credits in English or related field, from a regionally accredited university. Students with fewer than 24 upper-level undergraduate course credits in English may still be accepted in the program, but they will be required to make up the deficiency in undergraduate coursework by taking additional graduate courses in English while in the program. Undergraduate upper-level GPA of 3.00 or above. Students with an upper-level GPA score below a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale may still be eligible if they take the GRE and achieve a 300 combined score with a minimum of 156 verbal scale (new scale) or a 1000 combined score with a minimum verbal score of 550 (old scale). Minimum test scores required to determine proficiency are: IELTS - 6.5, TOEFL (iBT – 79, PBT – 550), GRE Verbal – 153.

The MA in Secondary Education, English Education is designed for those with a Bachelor's degree in the field of English. Graduates of this program will have a Master's degree in Education that includes 18 graduate credit hours in English. Students in the English Education program work closely with faculty in Education and English who are recognized as strong researchers and teachers in literature, composition, instructional design and human development and learning, with experience in schools and educational organizations. This program is designed for working professionals, featuring strong faculty mentorship and one-on-one advising to give students maximum flexibility.<br><br>Students expand on their undergraduate background in literature while gaining applied experience in teaching. Coursework and fieldwork prepare students to apply effective teaching methods in college and secondary classrooms. The cross-disciplinary sequence of courses explores content areas as well as technologies for the classroom. Research skills and strategies to improve instruction are included and field experiences are required.
