The issues facing society today are interdisciplinary in nature, requiring professionals with exposure to multiple disciplines and perspectives. Our interdisciplinary Ph.D. program was designed with this in mind. As a student in this program, you will work with a supervisory committee to design a course of study that spans disciplines and allows you to customize your coursework and research to your interests and career goals. In addition to focusing on your primary discipline in physics, you will select a compatible co-discipline, such as chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, engineering, curriculum and instruction, or computer science. You will also have the opportunity to pursue research in material physics, extra-galactic astronomy or applied electronics physics by becoming a student-partner with our faculty who are on the forefront of research in these areas. This program consists of didactic coursework in your primary and co-discipline areas of study; a written Ph.D. qualifying exam required by the department; a comprehensive exam that fulfills the interdisciplinary Ph.D. program requirements; and a research, dissertation and defense component, which begins after the exams have been passed.
