The metals program provides students with a solid conceptual and technical education. Students are exposed to current international trends in contemporary metalsmithing through an extensive series of visiting artists, exhibitions, and fieldtrips. In conjunction with the metals area the Rubin Center hosts biennial exhibitions featuring the work of many prominent artists working in the disciplines of jewelry, hollowware and sculpture. The metals facilities are well equipped and spacious. The primary studio space occupies approximately 4,500 square feet. The studio is equipped with small hand tools; a good selection of silversmithing hammers and stakes; large electric and hand rolling mills; a variety of shears, benders and sheet metal rollers; hydraulic die forming; complete casting facilities including computerized kilns, vulcanizer, wax injector, centrifugal caster; separate polishing, sanding and grinding room; aluminum anodizing and plating set-ups; enameling kilns, lathe, and more.
