Working with world leading companies/universities and supported by state-of-the-art facilities, the research in digital engineering is characterised by its user-led, application-driven, multi-disciplinary and cross-sector approach, with a distinguished track record on transforming data to information through signal and image processing.With research in Digital Engineering focused on technology development for a wide range of applications, it has directly benefited economy, people and society, in addition to generating new knowledge and stimulating further research in the academic communities.<br><br>In digital manufacturing, an affordable factory of the future based on tele-immersive digital manufacturing (TiM) has been developed in partnership with world-leading prime manufacturers and digital technology providers, providing not only an environment for close interaction between ICT technology push and industrial application pull for our region as a major manufacturing area in the world, but also a new manufacturing image in young people and in society through outreach activities and the visit by HM The Queen with HRH Duke of Edinburgh in The Queen's diamond jubilee tour.In industrial non-destructive evaluation, our collaboration with world leading aerospace companies has improved the safety and competitiveness of European aircrafts through increased defect detectability and assessment reliability at reduced inspection time and costs.<br><br>In medical non-invasive diagnosis, we lead a large European network and have pioneered a new set of clinical measurement modalities to improve the efficacy of assessment, monitoring and treatment of cancer and stroke which are two leading causes of death, and arthritis which is a major cause of disability.<br><br>Our work in radiation effects has influenced the development of STFC ISIS neutron test facilities, design optimisation of future avionics systems, and international standards, and our collaboration with NASA in coronal imaging has led to the highest ever resolution images of the sun for improved understanding of solar dynamics and space weather.
