Research in this area involves developing fundamental physicochemical understanding of biological processes and translating the knowledge into efficient design of therapeutically and industrial important products and processes. This is accomplished by interweaving the fields of molecular cellular biology with principles of physical chemistry and process engineering. Projects carried out in this area include: The development of computational systems biology models for discovering, quantifying and interpreting the relationships that characterize biological processes through the interpretation of experimental and computational data along with background biological knowledge. The development of systems biology models of inflammation studying the interplay between immune response and biological rhythms, The development of strategies for reversing the debilitating effects of nerve injury and disease currently hinges on a better understanding of mechanisms by which the neural circuitry is established and maintained in the healthy animal.
