The applicant's research interests must be clearly stated and relevant to the MEES Foundation
The academic preparation of the applicant must be consistent with stated interests and Foundation requirements.
All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better
The undergraduate GPA must be at least 3.0, although some students with a GPA below 3.0 may be provisionally accepted based on related research or work experience.
5. Applicants must submit the following documents as part of their application for graduate study in the MEES Program:
Official transcripts of all college-level work.
A brief essay clearly defining areas of research interest and research objectives (preferably including the Foundation of interest). The essay should not be in outline form.
A current CV or resume
Three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the academic work of the applicant.

IELTS - 7 Overall (Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7, Speaking 6.5)

The Marine Estuarine Environmental Sciences (MEES) is an ambitious state-wide multi-institutional graduate program of the University System of Maryland (USM) and offers MS and Ph.D. degrees. Our program is one of the largest multi-institutional graduate programs in the country in the environmental sciences with close partnerships and proximity to several federal labs (NOAA, NASA, USDA, etc.) and state agencies such as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Department of the Environment, along with other research centers, which enables our students to meet, learn from, and collaborate with some of the leading researchers in the discipline. In this foundation, students will obtain foundational knowledge of core theories and methods in the following domains of integrated social and environmental sciences: Coupled natural and human systems, cultural models of the environment, political ecology, participation and governance, ecological economics, and environmental ethics. Students will develop scholarship and practice in social science aspects of couples natural human systems that includes critical thinking, written and verbal communication, and practice in interdisciplinary fieldwork to hone skills in data collection and analysis, consensus building, and stakeholder analysis.
