In modern asymmetric synthesis, asymmetric catalysis remains the preferred route to introduce new stereogenic centres. However, there are many instances where asymmetric methodology is either inadequate or the methods are not practical, therefore alternative techniques and technologies are of extreme importance. For example, to the best of our knowledge, there are no satisfactory asymmetric synthetic methods to directly insert the carboxylic acid functional group and routes that utilise a pre-existing carboxylic moiety require the use of protecting groups. Electrosynthesis has been widely studied within the electrochemical community, but represents an underused tool, with great potential for the construction of chemical bonds. This presents electrosynthesis as a potential step changing technology, particularly since the use of electrons can be directly linked to many aspects associated with green chemistry. The formation of a thermodynamically and kinetically stable C-C bond is arguably the most desirable application for carbon dioxide chemistry, since many feedstocks could be produced. Coupled with the under use of electrosynthetic protocols, attractive and straightforward procedures for the carboxylation of carbon nucleophiles with CO2 as the electrophile remain largely underdeveloped.
