For applicants whose native language is not English, satisfactory scores from a standardized test commonly used and deemed appropriate for evaluation of English Language Proficiency, such as the TOEFL (a minimum score of 600 will be expected) or the IELTS (a minimum score of band 7).

课程简介

The Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology (GBCB) at Virginia Tech was established in 2003. The goal of this program is to provide an educational environment that enables students to apply quantitative methods in computer science, mathematics, and statistics to all areas of the life sciences. To facilitate this experience, students choose one of the program tracks (life sciences, computer science, mathematics, statistics) as their primary track, with the other areas as secondary tracks. The choice of primary track typically is based on the student's undergraduate major. Course requirements enable students to take advanced courses in their primary area as well as gain a deeper understanding of the complementary fields of study. This pedagogical approach provides the foundation from which students can combine these disciplines in their interdisciplinary research projects. Current enrollment in the program is approximately 45 students, with over 62 students having received the PhD degree since the inception of the program in Fall 2003. Faculty members affiliated with the program have academic appointments in many life science departments, the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics, as well as the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI). However, the GBCB program is a degree-granting program that is administered through the Graduate School, rather than any academic department or college. This administrative structure illustrates the truly interdisciplinary nature of the program. GBCB also is designated as one of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Programs (IGEPs) at Virginia Tech. For the purposes of this program and to insure that students have some breadth of exposure, four specialty tracks are defined: Life sciences, Computer science, Statistics, Mathematics.
