The research directed by faculty within the Applied Environmental Microbiology (AEM) section concentrates on the use of traditional and molecular techniques to explore environmental, industrial and medical aspects of the occurrence and biological activity of microorganisms. The inhibition of microbial processes by external agents in one main area of focus. One principal aim of the group is to create an interactive and rewarding research environment, in which researchers are given every opportunity to develop valuable research skills and to excel in their chosen discipline. The GSU Environmental Research Center (ERC) is also based within the AEM group, and creates an interdisciplinary focus on environmental problems such as bioremediation/biology effects, biofilms and indoor air quality. The Center has developed rapidly through strong links with other Departments at GSU, other Institutions and with Industry.
