Coding Specialists are in demand in acute-care and ambulatory-care facilities, physician's office practices, and long-term care facilities. A variety of government agencies require coding expertise as well. Coders are needed to accurately select ICD-10-CM/PCS codes, CPT codes, and DRG and APG assignments for diagnostic and surgical documentation recorded in health records. The statistical information generated from these codes is also used in reimbursement, research, quality improvement, education, and administrative decision making. The Coding Specialist Certificate program is a seven-quarter program. Classes meet once a week on Tuesday evenings. The last two quarters of the program consist of an internship-like laboratory experience, Coding Practica I and II. These practica courses meet twice a week in the evenings. In addition to the coding courses, the student is introduced to topics in health care records, confidentiality, ethics, and pharmacology.
