Applicants must have a postbaccalaureate degree in Communicative Disorders Human Development and Family Science Kinesiology Nutrition Physical Therapy or other appropriate discipline Applicants must submit a personal statement and identify a faculty member whom they would like to work with students should correspond with this person prior to applying describe their research interests experience and goals Up to 30 credits from a previouslyearned masters degree or clinical doctoral degree may be applied toward the PhD if the prior degree is in Communicative Disorders Human Development and Family Science Kinesiology Nutrition or Physical Therapy A minimum of 42 credits must be taken at the University of Rhode Island Transfer credits for students with degrees in other related disciplines will be assessed on a casebycase basis Applicants with course deficiencies will be expected to take additional coursework to ensure expertise It is expected that the applicant will contact prospective research mentors to discuss the potential for graduate study

A competitive applicant will have the following
A masters or DPT degree in one of the specializations listed above or a closely related field from an accredited institution
A personal statement not to exceed 1000 words describing
Their interest in health sciences particularly their area of specialization
What relevant researchwork experience they have
Why they chose to apply to the PhD program at URI
Which faculty members they wish to work evidence that they have already contacted the major professor with whom they would like to work
Letters of recommendation from references familiar with their potential for success in graduate study two required but can submit up to four letters
NOTE Applicants are not required to submit GRE scores

TOEFL IBT -
An overall score of 80 or above 82 for teaching assistantship consideration AND
Minimum scores in the following areas -
Reading 19
Writing 18
Listening 17
Speaking 18 the suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 20.
If you are below the minimum in one area by two points or in two areas by one point but have an overall score of 80 or above the Dean will make a determination if you can be considered.
IELTS -
International English Language Testing System IELTS All scores must be sent directly to URI Required minimum score of 6.5 AND minimum scores in the following areas -
Reading 6.5
Writing 6.5
Listening 6.5
Speaking 6.5. The suggested minimum speaking score for a teaching assistantship is 7.
The minimum score on the Paper-based TOEFL is 550.

Pearson Test of English - Required minimum scores are Reading 53 Writing 59 Listening 47 and Speaking 47 - 62 for international teaching assistants.
