Medical Laboratory Scientists, also known as Medical Technologists or Clinical Laboratory Scientists, serve as Medical Detectives. They are health care professionals who specialize in performing diagnostic tests on human tissue samples to precisely investigate the causes of patients' diseases. Medical Laboratory Scientists are in high demand. The Occupational Outlook Handbook projects that demand for these jobs will grow by 13% from 2016-2026, which is nearly twice the average job growth rate (7%). Median income nationwide was 51,770 in May 2017. Pennsylvania is listed as having the 5th-highest employment for this occupation in the country. 100% of recent graduates from this program have found employment as Medical Laboratory Scientists. In our four-year program, students spend their first three years at Saint Francis University pursuing an intensive study of biology and chemistry to gain a foundation in science. Students then apply to one of our affiliated Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) schools (see below), and upon acceptance, spend their fourth year gaining clinical expertise in subjects that include Clinical Chemistry, Immunohematology and Blood Banking, Bacteriology, Parasitology, Immunoserology, and Urinalysis. Upon satisfactory completion of the prescribed hospital courses, the student receives a Bachelor's of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, conferred by Saint Francis University.
