The master of science program emphasizes a research-clinical approach to Communication Sciences and Disorders. A master's graduate is best characterized as a general practitioner with many skills in specific areas of Speech-Language Pathology. Through academic preparation, practica, research, and externship experiences, our graduates are capable of functioning independently with some initial supervision and guidance. Master's degree graduates meet the academic and practicum requirements for ASHA certification and Pennsylvania state licensure (except for the Clinical Fellowship Year and passing the Certificate of Clinical Competence test). Master's graduates also can meet the requirements for a Pennsylvania Instructional Level I certification in Speech-Language Impaired, which are required to practice as a speech-language pathologist in a Pennsylvania public school. To do so, the student's academic and practicum program must meet current Pennsylvania Department of Education standards. To meet these standards, students may be required to enroll in additional courses, complete a full-time minimum twelve-week public school externship, and pass Pennsylvania certification tests.
