Biomedicine is at the heart of much of the exciting biosciences research taking place worldwide. Our BSc Biological Sciences with Biomedicine (Placement Year) is for those with a broad interest in the biological sciences, and who have a specific interest in the biological mechanisms underlying human health or disease. Lancaster University is ranked fifth in the UK for Biological Sciences by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. This four-year degree is ideal if you wish to gain work experience as part of your degree. It provides you with support to secure a paid placement for twelve months working in the type of organisation that you might aspire to join when you graduate. The placement offers you the opportunity to work as a full time employee of the organisation with the same training and opportunities as other employees, whilst still receiving both academic and pastoral support from Lancaster University.You will gain a broad grounding in bioscience subjects whilst maintaining an emphasis on specific biomedical topics. You will study key areas in biomedicine, plus subjects such as Cell Structure and Function, Evolution, Genetics, and Protein Biochemistry - all of which are core to cutting-edge biological and biomedical research.You will receive in-depth training in the key techniques associated with modern biological and biomedical practices, some of which are taught by professionals working in clinical settings. You will also conduct your own laboratory-based project and benefit from the research experience of our internationally renowned academics. In your first year, you will study core biomedical science subjects and select from optional biosciences modules. This diversity allows you to specialise in biomedical subjects in your second and fourth years. Flexibility and choice increases through the degree and in your fourth year, you select the majority of your modules. This means you can tailor your Biological Sciences with Biomedicine degree to your personal interests and career aspirations. You will spend your third year on an industrial placement, which may be science or non-science based. Although you will be supported by professional careers staff in preparing your industrial placement application, due to the competitive nature of these placements it is possible that not all students will be successful in securing these nationally-advertised opportunities. Students who have not secured an industrial placement will automatically be transferred over to the three-year degree without the placement year - our BSc Biosciences with Biomedicine.
