Our biochemistry with biomedicine degree is for those who would like to study the structure and function of living organisms at the biochemical and molecular level, but who want to focus on how the molecular processes of life are altered by disease. Lancaster University is ranked fifth in the UK for biological sciences and 12th for chemistry by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019. The degree will provide you with training in key aspects of biochemistry and biomedicine that are at the heart of modern biochemical and medical research, giving you an insight into how biochemistry can be used to develop treatments for diseases. We have extensive links with local hospitals, both in research activities and teaching on our biomedical-based courses. The first year of the BSc Biochemistry with Biomedicine is designed to provide you with a broad overview of both subject disciplines, including Molecules of Life, Biomedicine and Society, and Anatomy and Tissue Structure. In your second year, you will move on to a range of biochemical and biomedical subjects, with several modules designed to help you develop the key laboratory skills required by scientists working in these areas. Modules include Medical Microbiology, DNA Technology and Cell Biology. In your third year, you can tailor your degree to your personal and professional interests, selecting from a diverse range of optional modules including Tropical Diseases, Medical Genetics and Biology of Ageing.
