Princeton's Department of Music is at the epicenter of a musical culture that is broad and deep, reaching from edge to edge of the campus, from the classroom to the concert hall, and from faculty-led groups to those run exclusively by students. The Department of Music is a dynamic community of students, faculty, and renowned artists coming together to make music and, in the process, expand the definition of music and support the well-being and camaraderie of the Princeton student body. We welcome you to join us in our audiences, classrooms, and more. The Music Department thrives in part due to its emphasis on collaboration. This manifests not only within the department (graduate composers composing for the undergraduate orchestra, graduate musicologists making a performance edition for an undergraduate opera production), but also across the whole university and outside organizations and partners. The Music Department provides all Princeton University studentswhether they major in Music or another concentrationwith the opportunity to learn from a world-renowned faculty of composers, historians and theorists, take instrumental or voice lessons in the private studios of eminent professional performers and performance courses in chamber music, opera, vocal ensembles, audition to perform with our faculty-led ensembles including an African Music Ensemble, jazz groups, choirs, orchestras, and a laptop orchestra, and share their passion with local youth through programs offered by Trenton Arts at Princeton. Aspiring performers can take advantage of several study abroad programs, including a double-degree program with the Royal College of Music in London. Students may also participate in a host of student-run groups including numerous a cappella groups, chamber music collectives, an early music ensemble, opera company, composers collective, and a piano collective.
