Degrees in composition are offered at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, with an emphasis on composing acoustic music for the concert hall. Students in both of these degree programs organize a full recital of their compositions, and Master's students also complete a large-scale work as a final project. All music majors may take composition as an elective by enrolling in MUS 352, which includes composition lessons, weekly composition seminar, and participation in the Student Composers Recitals that occur once or twice each semester.The composition and theory faculty teach the core music theory and aural skills courses required for all music majors, as well as upper level courses such as Form and Analysis, Counterpoint, Topics in Music Analysis and graduate seminars in music theory.
