Drawing is an important component of the BFA program for students in all concentrations. Beginning drawing courses emphasize the development of solid perceptual drawing skills through rigorous explorations of drawing's materials and methods. Assignments encourage both traditional and experimental approaches to the medium as students confront challenges related to line, value, composition, and other important skills. Intermediate and advanced courses build upon the skills learned in Drawing Foundations while introducing more personal and conceptual approaches to the medium. 200 and 400 level offerings in the area include both broadly-based drawing courses as well as life drawing. In all courses, students learn to view drawing as a problem-solving activity. Critiques of student work and discussions about drawing's role in contemporary art and art history fuel interesting conversations and encourage an ongoing dialogue about art making. At all levels, risk taking and experimentation are encouraged.
