All graduate applications are submitted electronically and must be supported by appropriate academic transcripts from each college/university attended, three letters of recommendation, and resume. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted online with the graduate application. Official transcripts must be provided only after a candidate has been accepted by the program and formally admitted to the university. All letters of recommendation must be submitted online. Design portfolios should be uploaded to the electronic application; if the portfolio is available online, a link to the specific website should be uploaded.
For those international applicants that are required to take the TOEFL test to measure English language proficiency, a minimum score of 80 is considered passing. To be eligible to receive a teaching assistantship, a minimum score on the speaking portion of 26 is required.

IELTS - An overall minimum score of 7.0 for admission, with a score of no less than 6.0 on any individual module.
Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
GRE exam is not required

The lighting design program at UCIrvine is dedicated to the professional training of advanced students interested in developing their talents and skills in the art and technology of lighting design. This education is uniquely designed to prepare students for careers in theatrical lighting, entertainment lighting, concert lighting, and architectural lighting.<br><br>The program provides a balanced education during the three years of graduate study by combining the creative, practical, theoretical, digital, scientific, philosophical, and psychological aspects of the nature of light. Courses are offered in these various areas of study to assist the student in becoming a well-rounded lighting artist and practitioner. The multi-disciplined program encourages students to explore many areas of lighting, allowing them to discover their own area of expertise and to focus on a career in lighting design that is well suited to their interests and talents.<br><br>The UCIrvine program provides the student with a balanced exposure to both the creative and technical elements of lighting. Course topics include lighting composition, plotting techniques, automated lighting, digital visualization and documentation, history of lighting and illumination, architectural lighting, verbal and visual presentation techniques, lighting technology, system design and consulting, and lighting business management. The design program also offers the most current training in digital design including 2d/3d Modeling, Scenic & Lighting Rendering, and Digital Light Plot Creation.
