Academic transcript. Unofficial transcript uploaded to the online application. If you are admitted, an official, degree-bearing transcript must be mailed to the University. Applicants must complete a U.S. bachelor's degree (or its equivalent in another country) before starting a graduate program.
Personal statement/essay. Describe in approximately 500 words your main academic interests, why you wish to study for the degree you have chosen, why you wish to study at Syracuse University, how you expect to finance your studies, and your plans after you receive your degree. Upload directly to the online application.
Once you submit your application to the Graduate School, please allow up to three business days of processing. Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation email along with instructions on how to access your portfolio portal.
Submit original films online (10 minutes max.) via the Syracuse University Applicant Portal. Be certain to clearly indicate your role in the production of the film. Your submitted films should be a complete piece, not excerpts or reel, and should represent your best work.
The recommended minimum TOEFL score required on the internet-based (iBT) test is 90
The minimum IELTS score is 6.5

The M.F.A. in film is an advanced degree for filmmakers, earned in preparation for a professional career. The program emphasizes two things equally: creative production in dramatic, experimental, and documentary forms, and film studies (notably theory, criticism, and history). Production courses and academic courses are integrated throughout, and this intense mingling of theory and practical application results in a lively interchange of ideas and a viable transferring of ideas into action. The program meets professional and educational needs in experimental and dramatic film production. The complementary curriculum structured for the degree in film is unique, and courses are offered throughout the year, including some summer sessions.
