The German and Portuguese degree allows for both those with previous qualifications or complete beginners in each language. Attain a high level of proficiency in the German and Portuguese languages on this joint degree in the heart of London and develop knowledge and understanding of the cultures, histories and societies of German and Portuguese-speaking countries (Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa). Our required language modules cater for all levels from beginners to native speakers. Through our required language modules you will attain a high level of proficiency in speaking, writing and reading the German and Portuguese languages, whilst developing your knowledge and critical understanding of German culture and society. Our four-year course is designed for your level of language competence, and to the internationally recognised Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).<br><br>The German Department curriculum reflects our commitment to innovative and research-led teaching. Staff across the Department contribute introductory and specialist modules that draw from their own research in German literature, culture and history. Our exceptionally wide range of options covers literature of all periods, German film, German history, German philosophical thought and German political and social theory. Opportunity to study abroad for a year offers students the chance to immerse themselves in culture and society and achieve language fluency. We have exchanges with a number of partner universities currently including Lisboa, Nova de Lisboa, Coimbra, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Universidade de S?o Paulo and Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. The year abroad also offers the opportunity to undertake an internship/work placement in a Portuguese-speaking environment (typically sourced by students themselves).
