Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. Bristol is one of the UK's most successful and respected centres for the study of modern languages and cultures. This joint honours degree in Czech and French offers a wide range of units, so you will be able to select authors, topics and texts to suit your interests. In language classes you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will choose from optional units combining cultural, historical and sociological approaches for both Czech and French. During your third year you will spend five months in the Czech Republic, either at university or on a work placement. You will spend the remainder of your third year in a French-speaking country. In Czech, you will discover the diversity of Czech literature, history, cinema and society, from the 19th century to the present. You can examine Czech gender identity through units that focus on a range of areas, from politics to imagery, set within the context of Central and Eastern Europe as well as Western Europe. You can study Czech history and explore Czech cinema and aspects of contemporary society. The French part of course offers a broad range of French studies through the study of language, history, literature and culture, from medieval literature to modern cinema.
