Whether you are a beginner or you have an A Level in your chosen language, you'll find the combination of a foreign language and teaching English a stimulating and career-enhancing degree option. You'll also gain classroom teaching experience and have the opportunity to achieve an academic and internationally recognised professional qualification. The course develops confidence, organisational, analytical and people skills along with cultural awareness and aims to consolidate and strengthen your existing knowledge of grammar and expression.You'll develop fluency in your chosen language and gain a thorough understanding of the wider social, cultural and political context of the regions where the language is spoken. Your skills and knowledge are complemented in TESOL with the analysis of English language, further work on oral and written communication and study of theories, approaches and methodologies related to teaching and learning English.<br><br>A year abroad in the country of your main language (joint and major students only) is encouraged. This is usually spent studying at a partner institution, on a work placement or working as a teaching assistant.<br><br>Graduates of the course have followed careers in teaching, education management, publishing, the civil service, translating and interpreting while others have followed further postgraduate studies. Many of our graduates are now working abroad.<br><br>You can choose to spend your period abroad on a work or study placement or as an English language assistant. Additionally, our Worldwise Learning Centre offers five-day work experience placements and short-term internships for graduates and final year students.<br><br>You may be interested to progress onto the following Masters programmes: MA TESOL with Applied Linguistics and MA Interpreting and Translation.We also offer a number of places to students who wish to pursue research degrees (MA by Research/MPhil/PhD).
