This project is based within the School of Applied Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University and is led by Dr David Muggeridge (https://www.napier.ac.uk/people/david-muggeridge). This project includes optimising physiological adaptation to physical activity and exercise intervention with the use of digital/ wearable technology to support and monitor adaptation. Applications for both PhD and MRes will be considered for this project. Physical inactivity is one of the leading risk factors for death worldwide and a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases (1). Globally 1 in every 4 adults do not perform enough physical activity, however that statistic is even greater locally, where in England 34% men and 42% women and in Scotland 31% men and 41% women (2) do not meet the government guidelines. Monitoring physical activity on a population-wide scale, in addition to conducting observational and experimental studies, has therefore become a key element of public health practice due to the multitude of health inadequacies/benefits associated with low or high physical activity. Furthermore, interventions to increase physical activity are effective in reducing this burden. Interestingly, a recent systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that the utilisation of a consumer-based wearable activity tracker, used either as the primary component of an intervention or as part of a broader physical activity intervention, has the potential to increase participation in physical activities (3). This project will develop in-house digital tools capable of capturing, synchronizing and sharing data from wearable technologies and co-develop interventions to improve physical activity in various populations utilising this technology.
