Our department is one of the leading centres in the world for the study of art and material culture and the only centre in the UK concerned with the study of art worldwide. We welcome applications for PhDs, MPhil degrees and Masters' by Research.<br>RESEARCH DEGREES - Staff research interests include: Arts of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas, Modern and Contemporary Art, Medieval and Early Renaissance Art, Eighteenth-Century Art and Architecture, Modern India, Art in Britain and in the US, Prehistoric/Ancient Art and Archaeology, Museum and Heritage Studies. <br>STUDENT RESEARCH - Students research topics have included: <br>- Alabaster carvers of medieval England (AHRC - funded in collaboration with the British Museum) <br>- Animal painting in Britain, 1760-1840 (AHRC - funded in collaboration with Tate) <br>- Medieval collections of the Museum of London (AHRC - funded in collaboration with MoL) <br>- Ethnographic collage and international modernism in post-war Britain, 1947-87 <br>- The international contemporary art triangle network in the UK, South Asia and Africa <br>- The late work of Walter Sickert <br>- Lebanese female artists and diasporic experience <br>- Mapping in early modern Bologna <br>- Physiognomy, pathognomy and body rhetoric in Romanesque and early Gothic sculpture <br>- The reception of African art in imperial Germany <br>RESEARCH EVENTS AND RESEARCH SKILLS TRAINING - As a postgraduate student you can participate in our Graduate Research Seminar, collaborate with your peers to organize our annual Postgraduate Colloquium, and engage with visiting speakers from around the globe in our regular Research Seminar series. Youll also develop your research and professional skills through regular training sessions organised within the department and by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Graduate School.
