Develop your people management expertise and understanding of how modern businesses function in a fast-changing world on our Business Management and Human Resources BSc.
The multidisciplinary nature of our Business Management and Human Resources BSc will enable you to build your confidence in handling different people management issues, enhance your professional skills, and increase your understanding of how businesses operate. You will analyse how effective people management expertise can help organisations gain competitive advantage through employing the most appropriate and qualified people, strategy and Human Resource Management (HRM) techniques.
Our Business Management and Human Resources BSc is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and the curriculum is designed to enable you to acquire the professional competencies required for a successful and exciting future career as one of the business leaders of tomorrow, and to improve your understanding of contemporary developments in both subject areas.
You will be introduced to management and learn to critically think about the world of work and a manager's role in relation to it, as well as management practices. You will also explore global business environments so you can comprehend the different macro-environment factors that can affect organisations. We will provide you with the foundations of Human Resource Management (HRM), focusing on areas including the nature of employment relationships, regulations and current challenges and issues in HRM. These foundations will be further developed on specialist modules as you progress on the course. You will also investigate management in a changing society to broaden your understanding of managing people in the context of social change.
Optional modules at this early stage of your course provide you with the opportunity to focus your studies on topics including accounting, business law, economics, international business and the opportunity to learn more about managing in organisations by working with other students to find a solution to a business problem set by a multinational corporation.
As you progress on this course you will study the theory and practice of recruiting employees and the various internal and external factors that can affect this. You will examine employment relations looking at the roles of employers, trade unions and the state, to develop your understanding of these complex relationships. You will begin to look at the fundamental concepts of human behaviour within organisations as well as motivation, politics, leadership, and gender.
We currently offer a module that helps to enhance your professional HRM knowledge and skills. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of a range of issues that are central to the human resource management profession and the competencies needed by human resource (HR) professionals. Another of our modules will allow you to examine other key areas of HRM looking at specific areas including resolving workplace disputes, managing dismissal, redundancy and retirement, flexible working and work-life balance, wellbeing and health and safety, and equality, diversity and inclusion.
You will study modules which centre on employee development issues and give you the opportunity to analyse pay and labour markets, as well as general theories related to pay and pay determination processes. Explore the different theories and practices of entrepreneurship and starting a new business, and undertake a programme of independent study to gain a critical insight into contemporary HRM.
