Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelor's degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.
GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.
English proficiency test scores required by the University:
Duolingo English Test- For students affected by test center closures due to COVID-19, the University is temporarily accepting Duolingo as an alternative. 100 or higher on the overall score, all sub scores must be at least 80.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Institution code 1459. TOEFL - 550 or higher on the paper version, 79 or higher on the internet-based test
IELTS (International English Language Testing System- 6.0 or higher
PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 53 or higher
An undergraduate degree with a major in mathematics or statistics is required. The minimum GPA is 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students whose major was not in mathematics or statistics will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Letters of recommendation recommendation need to be submitted upon request.
IELTS or TOEFL scores are required for students whose native language is not English.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree. The M.S. degree program is designed to provide students with a solid mathematical background for careers in industry or education, to foster the development of advanced oral and written mathematical communication skills, and to boost mathematical credentials in preparation of doctoral studies. Qualified M.S. students will have opportunities to explore research under the supervision of a faculty member. The program is offered for the M.S. degree concentrations in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Statistics, and Teaching of Mathematics. The expected time for completion of the M.S. degree for a full-time student is two years and less in some cases.<br>Program objectives are (1) development of thorough background in mathematical sciences, including retention and integration of core knowledge, (2) development of research skills in mathematics, and (3) development of interdisciplinary opportunities and good oral and written communication skills. Satisfactory completion of 33 credit hours of graduate course work in a program approved by the department is required. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers graduate programs leading to the Masters of Science degree with a major in Mathematical Sciences and a concentration in one of the following areas. Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Teaching of Mathematics, and Statistics. M.S. students in Mathematics develop a solid background in mathematical sciences, good oral and written mathematical communication skills, and explore interdisciplinary opportunities. The expected time for completion of a M.S. is two years, and less in many cases.
